A
very rare Snowy Owl (Nyctea scandiaca) from
the Arctic was spotted this morning 11th August 2004
near the Aphort lakes by Michael Early of Illion. Michael
came across the bird while out walking and luckily he
had his camera with him!
"The
owl is very large with yellow eyes and long, broad,
rounded wings. Males are pure white with occasional
dark spots. Their usual range is Alaska, Canada,
Greenland, Iceland and Scandinavia."
The
Complete Guide to Ireland's Birds by Eric Dempsey & Michael
O'Clery.
There
was a previous sighting of this magnificent bird on the
island in 1992.
