History

Ionad Pobail Árainn Mhór, or Arranmore Community Centre, is located at the crossroads at Fal a' Gabhann.  It was originally built in the 1950's by Joss "Nancy" Ó Domhnaill as a dance hall and was later bought by Joe Proctor who opened a bar in the lower part of the building.  Údarás na Gaeltachta opened a textile factory there in 1974 which produced garments until 1976.  The building was bought from Údarás na Gaeltachta by Comharchumann Forbartha & Fostaíochta Árainn Mhór in 2005 and is used by Coláiste Árainn Mhór during the summer months.

The Future
Ionad Pobail Feasibility StudyPlans are underway to refurbish and rebuild the hall and bring it up to modern building standards.  A feasibility study was carried out by MacGabhann Architects of Letterkenny who proposed a number of options.  A copy of the feasibility study can be downloaded here (.pdf 1.7 MB). Efforts are now underway to secure funding from Central Government and an application has been submitted to An Roinn Gnothaí Pobail, Tuaithe & Gaeltachta for consideration.

The estimated cost of the project is around €1.1 Million and a local contribution of 20% must be raised.  This is where you can help by supporting our fundraising activities on the island, via the web site or at a location near you.

One of the initiatives we have started is the buy-a-brick section on the island web site.  You can buy some bricks (click on the "Buy Bricks" link at the top of the page) to raise money for the centre and at the same time place your logo, message or name on the bricks you have bought.  As the co-op is a registered charity (charity number CHY14463) your donation could be tax deductible (See the forms and information from Revenue for more details.) Alternatively you can make a donation using the "Make a Donation" button located above left. Go raibh míle maith agaibh!
